The Civil Constitution of the Clergy
The Civil Constitution of the Clergy was a Law made by the French Government. This Law was passed on the 12th of July, 1790. It stated that the Roman Catholic Church of France be subordinate under the French Government. This law made to help the people of france because this Constitution also confiscated the Church’s Land holdings to give to the people. The Bishops and Preists opposed this law because of course, they still wanted the power and, because this law also required them to swear an oath to the french government but, they’re saying that they already swore an oath to the Pope. The government on the other hand was forcing those who opposed this law to flee France and leave their posts. The national assembly thought that all the church members would, in time, swear the oath but, they were wrong. Only eight swore the oath and even Pope Pius XI was against it. This argument caused there to be unrest and argument between the Church and the Government of France.
