La Marseillaise
“La Marseillaise”, the French National Anthem, was created by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle in Strasbourg during 1792. Lisle was an engineer and an amateur musician when he composed this song. He created this song as a response to the call of the mayor of Strasbourg, Dietrich. Dietrich's call stated that he felt that the French troops need a song they could march to.
Originally called the “Chant de Geurce de L'armée du Rhun”, in English meaning “The War Song of the Army of Rhine”, Lisle never imagined his song becoming the National Anthem. This song became known that is was sung during revolutional public occasions. Due to the theme of the song, La Marseillaise was banned a few times by Napoleon and King Louis XVII. The theme of the song was a way to encourage Lisle's fellowmen to fight for their country. This song was to help them stand up against their enemies and stay strong for their country.
